Celebrities converge on Met Gala to celebrate ‘the art of being extra’

The annual Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute Gala — or Met Gala — is famed for its A-list celebrities and haute couture gowns.

And this year’s costumes did not disappoint.

The theme of Camp: Notes on Fashion was inspired by Susan Sontag’s 1964 essay, in which she describes it as something that shouldn’t be talked about.

“To talk about Camp is therefore to betray it,” Sontag wrote.

Celebrities from the worlds of fashion, film, music and sport converged on the pink carpet in New York to show off their humorous, exaggerated and liberal interpretations.

We saw everything from sequins, neon, trains and capes, to a seven-eyed face, a decapitated head and a chandelier.

Yes, you read that right.

So without further ado, here were some of the most notable looks from the night:

Actress and singer Zendaya channelled a Cinderella transformation:

Actress Lena Waithe from Master of None and Ready Player One wore a look that made a literal statement. The back of her suit reads: Black Drag Queens Invented Camp.

Ugly Betty Actor Michael Urie gave us a visually fascinating half-half:

And speaking of the Kardashian-Jenner family, here is matriarch Kris Jenner with Corey Gamble, Kim Kardashian, Kanye West, Kendal Jenner, Kylie Jenner and Travis Scott.
