Police are investigating the death of a woman after her body was found by a passer-by in a laneway in Melbourne’s CBD this morning.

Key points:

  • The woman’s body was found shortly after 6:30am in the Chinatown district
  • The ABC has been told the body was found on the street
  • Little Bourke Street has been closed between Russell and Swanston streets

Police said the woman was believed to be approximately 33 years old.

“Investigators have been told the woman, who is yet to be identified, was located at the intersection of Little Bourke Street and Celestial Avenue just after 6:30am,” police said in a statement.

“The exact cause of the woman’s death is yet to be determined and the investigation is ongoing.”

The intersection of the streets sits within the city’s iconic Chinatown district, which is home to dozens of restaurants and shops.

Homicide detectives and about half a dozen uniformed police officers are at the scene, which has been cordoned off.

Little Bourke Street has been closed to pedestrians and traffic between the busy thoroughfares of Russell and Swanston streets.

Workers who have been trying to reach their businesses, including a security guard responding to an alarm, have been turned away.

More to come.
