Two rescuers have died after being thrown into the waters off Port Campbell, in western Victoria, while trying to save a man who had been swept into the water by a large wave.
Police said the man was taking photos from a rock ledge when he went into the water at the mouth of the Sherbrook River in Port Campbell National Park about 10:30am.
A rescue boat was sent out to help but it flipped throwing the three occupants into the water.
An emergency helicopter winched two men to safety — the man in the water and one of the rescuers, who was seriously injured.
The man who was swept into the water was taken to hospital in a stable condition while the other man was airlifted to hospital.
The bodies of the two other male rescuers were found in the water and were declared dead at the scene.
Police will prepare a report for the coroner.
