A 24-year-old man has been taken into custody on suspicion of the murder of 58-year-old Ipswich man David Thornton.
The man, from Peak’s Crossing, was taken into custody in Byron Bay this morning.
He will likely be extradited to Queensland on Wednesday morning to be formally charged with murder.
On Monday police excavated the backyard of a Goodna home belonging to Mr Thornton, who had been missing for at least five weeks, and found two freezers, one containing human remains believed to be that of Mr Thornton.
Detective Inspector David Briese said forensic examinations are still being undertaken.
“I can confirm that yesterday we did find the remains of a male person, we believe that to be, from the circumstances that we know at this point, we believe that it is likely that it is David,” he said.
“We’re only sort of halfway through the autopsy so it’s hard for me to comment.
“Both the victim and the 24-year-old male were known to each other and had been for some time.”
Mr Briese said Mr Thornton’s family have been informed.
“As you can understand they’re very upset,” he said.
“Their worst realisations appear to have come to fruition.”
