A man has been charged after he allegedly rode a horse into an anti-Adani protester in Central Queensland yesterday.
The 61-year-old woman was travelling in the Bob Brown Foundation’s Stop Adani convoy, which held a rally yesterday in Clermont.
Police alleged the 41-year-old entered the entertainment ring at the showgrounds on horseback about 3:30pm and struck the woman who was heading for a gate.
The man was charged with “dangerous operation of a vehicle [namely a horse] causing grievous bodily harm”, common assault, trespass and obstructing police and will appear in Mackay Magistrates Court today.
The Stop Adani convoy was met with jeering and hostility by unions and locals when it arrived in Clermont on Saturday.
Bob Brown told reporters yesterday that some in his convoy were threatened by locals as they arrived into town, although police said no other arrests were made.
He spoke to media shortly after the horse incident.
“There is no place for that behaviour … no place for out-of-control yahoo-ism.”
Isaac Region Mayor Anne Baker said the alleged actions of the rider didn’t reflect the local community.
“We made it absolutely clear from the outset that disruptive behaviour from any party or person would not be tolerated.”
The Stop Adani convoy left Hobart almost two weeks ago, with hundreds of cars registered, and will now travel to Canberra for a final pre-election rally on May 5.
Outspoken Queensland political figures, like Matt Canavan, Pauline Hanson and Clive Palmer, gave speeches to the pro-Adani crowd in Clermont on Saturday.
