Two Melbourne hikers who had been missing for four nights on Victoria’s Mount Buffalo have been found safe and well, Victoria Police has confirmed.
Key points:
- A kayaker found the couple, who will be taken to hospital for observation
- The couple had been missing since failing to return from a bushwalk on Friday
- About 250 people were involved in the search for the pair
Trevor Salvado, 60, and Jacinta Bohan, 58, were found by a kayaker about 11:10am at Buffalo River in the state’s north-east, police said.
The Essendon couple had been missing since Friday after failing to return from a bushwalk about 12:30pm.
Ms Bohan’s sister Maria Bohan said the couple’s children were on their way to see their parents, who were doing “amazingly very well” after their ordeal in the bush.
“The police are taking them to Myrtleford police station to double check their health and Cindy and Trevor’s three adult children are going to meet them there,” Ms Bohan told ABC Radio Melbourne.

“They’ll be checked out and probably be taken to the Myrtleford Hospital, which they’ll hate, but [they’re] reportedly in very good spirits.
“Other family are heading to Mount Buffalo to thank the stunning police and all the volunteers.
“They were talking up to 250 [searchers] at different times depending on the time of the day and lots of local bushwalkers, stunning police.”
‘It’s so exciting’
Hundreds of people were involved in the search for the pair, including police, the Country Fire Authority and State Emergency Service as well as many volunteers.
Horses and aircraft were also used in the search, which was made more challenging by rugged terrain, including a large number of gullies, crevasses and boulders.
Police said yesterday weather conditions for the search had been favourable, and they remained optimistic about finding the couple, who were experienced hikers and were familiar with the area.
Ms Bohan said they did not yet know the details of how they became lost, or why they were found a significant distance from where their car was parked.
“I don’t know how come they’re near a bloody river,” she said.
“It’s so exciting … I’m a bit hyper. It’s a wonder you haven’t heard me swearing loudly from Bright.”
She said the couple were likely to get a telling off from their children for not using an emergency locator device.
“You should hear what their children are getting ready to tell them,” Ms Bohan said.
Their son, Nathan Salvado, said yesterday that his parents had told him they were going up to Mt Buffalo with friends and would be back in a couple of days.
He said he received a text from one of their friends saying they had not been seen at the Bright campground, where they would normally meet on the Labour Day weekend.
