Police have released CCTV footage showing the moment a man brandishing an axe and a knife threatened a mother and her two young children in Brisbane’s north before stealing their car.
Key points:
- Children in car in Chermside West when man brandishes knife, sword
- Mother and kids get to safety
- Car stolen and is still missing
The 24-year-old man can be seen approaching the 35-year-old woman as she was standing outside her car in Chermside West late on Wednesday afternoon.
He then demanded she hand over the car keys.
The woman managed to remove her children from the car before the assailant got in and drove away.
The car, which is still missing, is a white 2008 Ford Focus hatchback with Queensland registration 775 YNH.
Detectives believe the man can also assist them with a series of recent incidents in Brisbane and Logan.

Two officers were allegedly threatened with a knife when confronting a man for stealing items from a store in a Loganholme shopping centre earlier on Wednesday.
The man fled the scene in an orange station wagon which was then driven to the Chermside West location.
On Monday this week, the same man allegedly approached an elderly couple at a residence on Prospect Street in Sherwood, west of Brisbane, and produced a knife before demanding money.
The couple refused and the man fled in a waiting vehicle, which was believed to be the orange station wagon stolen from Hillcrest last Saturday.
Police have asked for public help to find the man, who has been seen driving dangerously at high speed and may pose a danger to the public.
They have urged anyone with information about the man’s whereabouts not to approach him, but to contact triple zero immediately.
