Two men have died after a small aircraft crashed off shore near the popular holiday spot of Busselton, about two hours south of Perth.
South West District Inspector Steve George confirmed a report would be prepared for the coroner after the two adult men, whose names have not been released, died in the crash 200 kilometres south of Perth.
Inspector George said the privately-owned aircraft — a small helicopter-like craft known as a gyrocopter — crashed about 10 metres from shore.
“We’ve just had a witness say they observed the gyroplane was about 200 metres up into the air and it crashed into the water. That’s all we’ve got so far.”
“Busselton police [will] prepare a report for the coroner, and then the air traffic authority from Canberra will conduct an investigation.
“Tomorrow we’ll probably get police divers to come out and have a look, to search the ocean looking for different parts.”
Witness says aircraft was making a strange sound
Port Geographe resident Bill Riding said he saw the gyrocopter flying overhead just after 2:00pm.
“I noticed it was making a strange metallic sound as it went by,” he said.
“We regularly get them [gyrocopters] flying overhead and they don’t make that noise which is why I noticed it.”
Police said the aircraft crashed just off the shore line at Forrest Beach, between Capel and Busselton, about 2:20pm.
A police spokesman said the exact make and model of the aircraft was not yet confirmed.
A number of police and other emergency responders remained at the scene.
