An overseas tourist has died after falling through a skylight at a Catholic church on the Gold Coast.

The 23-year-old was with five other men on the roof of St Vincent’s Catholic Church at Surfers Paradise at about 2:00am when he fell about 10 metres, police said.

Paramedics could not revive the man.

The church was declared a crime scene and Sunday’s services were cancelled.

Police said the death was the result of misadventure and they would prepare a report for the coroner.

Acting Inspector Brendan Wiblen said police were “conducting a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances of this incident”.

Warren Kinne, a visiting priest who works for the parish, said he was turning people away on Sunday because services had been suspended.

“Whatever they were doing on the roof I don’t know but falling through to his death is very sad for the family.”

“We’ll pray for them.”

Detectives have interviewed five men aged between 19 and 31 from south-east Queensland and Western Australia.

One of the men was taken to hospital with a head injury.
