A search and rescue operation is underway to reach five men stranded in floodwaters in north Queensland.

Police say a ute carrying five men was washed off Tondara Road at Bogie, west of Bowen, this morning.

A rescue helicopter was dispatched from Townsville to search for the men but bad weather prevented it from landing.

Another helicopter will now be sent from Mackay.

Police said the group got out of their vehicle but were stranded and may be trying to make their way towards the coast.

The group had been in the area on a pig hunt last night but heavy rainfall has blocked the only road in and out of the area.

The Bruce Highway is currently cut between Ayr and Bowen at Gumlu due to flooding.

Strathbogie, south of Ayr, has received 432 millimetres of rain in the 12 hours to 10am, while at Eton Vale there was 171mm.

At Groper Creek, near Ayr, 187mm was recorded.

A severe weather warning remains in place for areas between Bowen and Townsville for thunderstorms and heavy rainfall caused by ex-tropical cyclone Penny.

The Bureau of Meteorology warns locally heavy rainfall may cause flash flooding over the next few hours.

Thunderstorms are also forecast this afternoon from Townsville to Cairns.

Further inland, south of Theodore, Downfall Creek received 153mm while Cracow recorded 139mm.
