Nick Kyrgios has taken a swipe at Lleyton Hewitt in a since-deleted Instagram post only a day after denying there was a rift between him and the Australian Davis Cup captain.

Key points:

  • Nick Kyrgios deleted the Instagram post relating to Lleyton Hewitt watching Alex de Minaur’s match
  • Kyrgios had previously said he was upset with the media attention surrounding Bernard Tomic’s criticism of Hewitt
  • He also took a swipe at tennis coach Roger Rasheed and AFL personaliaty Gerard Healy on Twitter

It is the latest development in the saga that has engulfed the Australian Open since Monday night when Bernard Tomic launched a stinging attack on Hewitt.

Kyrgios took a photo of a TV broadcast of Alex de Minaur’s second-round match at the Australian Open, which showed Hewitt conducting media duties in the stands on Margaret Court Arena.

De Minaur’s match was taking place at the same time as another Australian, John Millman, was playing Roberto Bautista Agut in the second round, while Matt Ebden was facing off against Rafael Nadal.

“Who’s (sic) match is he watching,” Kyrgios wrote in the post, which also included a poll asking whether it was “Demon” (de Minaur) or “no-one else”.

The deleted social media post comes 24 hours after Kyrgios was asked a question at an Australian Open media conference about whether there was a rift between him and Hewitt.

“Not really,” Kyrgios said on Tuesday night.

Kyrgios also answered “sure” when questioned whether he supported Hewitt as captain going forward.

His social media activity also comes in the wake of him expressing his disappointment about the media attention surrounding Tomic’s criticism of Hewitt.

“I think it’s ridiculous, to be honest,” he said.

“With all the issues that are going on in the world, we’re focusing on someone’s comments about Davis Cup. It’s pretty sad. It’s pretty sad.”

Tomic, following his loss in the first round of the Australian Open on Monday night, had claimed Hewitt was disliked by Australian players and needed to be replaced.

“I’m going to say it honestly, no-one likes him anymore,” Tomic said.

Tomic also suggested Hewitt favoured certain players when it came to Davis Cup selection and had a say in the awarding of wildcards at the Australian Open.

Hewitt has been working closely with de Minaur, attending his matches at the Australian Open and the Brisbane and Sydney Internationals.

He also watched Kyrgios’s first-round match against Milos Raonic from the stands in Melbourne Arena on Tuesday night.

‘You blokes all have zero idea’

Kyrgios’s social media posts on Wednesday night also included an attack on respected tennis coach Roger Rasheed and prominent AFL personality and Brownlow Medal winner, Gerard Healy.

Rasheed and Healy had discussed how Kyrgios and Tomic, as well as Thanasi Kokkinakis, could improve their games on Melbourne radio earlier on Wednesday.

“You blokes all have zero idea,” Kyrgios tweeted.

“It’s comical people like yourself have an opinion of us.”

In another tweet he said Rasheed, who coached Hewitt and a series of top 10 players, should be “ashamed”.
