The principal of a school in Melbourne’s west has been stood down after video emerged of him dragging a pupil through the playground.

The video, which shows Steve Warner, the principal of Manor Lakes P-12 College in Wyndham Vale, dragging the student by his arm, appears to have been captured on a mobile phone and was posted to social media today.

Victorian Education Minister James Merlino said the behaviour captured in the video was “completely unacceptable”.

“As the Minister for Education and as a parent, this footage is appalling and concerning,” he said.

“Let me be very clear, I will not tolerate this kind of completely unacceptable behaviour in our schools.

“There will be an independent investigation into the staff member’s conduct and he has been immediately stood down while this takes place.”

An spokeswoman for the Department of Education and Training said it was aware of the video and had launched an investigation.

“All school staff are expected to uphold the department’s values, and abide by the Child Safe Standards,” the spokeswoman said.

It is not clear when the video was taken.
